First Timers: Race Day 101

12 January 2022

Okay, so you've checked-in and racked your bike and now it's race day!

Here's our top tips on how to tackle race morning.

  • Get up a few hours before your race start and eat something - but nothing new on race day! Eat only familiar, easily digestible foods.
  • Go to the bathroom... if you know, you know.
  • Hydrate!
  • Apply sunscreen - and bring some to transition if you think you might need to reapply.
  • Leave yourself plenty of time to get to the event if you're driving or taking the shuttle bus. Changed traffic conditions will be in place prior to race start and the last thing you need is extra stress!
  • Make sure you have everything you need. Here's an idea of what your race day check-list should look like...

Swim

  • Swimsuit or trisuit
  • Goggles
  • Bright, coloured towel (to help you find your spot in transition)
  • Wetsuit (if required) - water temperature is determined on the day.

Bike

  • Helmet (with helmet sticker applied)
  • Cycling shoes (if wearing)
  • Socks (if wearing)
  • Sunglasses
  • Water bottle
  • Nutrition (gels, bars, lollies)
  • Tool kit
  • Bike pump (attach pump sticker)

Run

  • Running shoes
  • Socks (if wearing)
  • Race Belt/Safety pins
  • Hat/Visor
  • Change of clothes

Don’t forget your timing chip (worn on your left ankle) and have your tattoos applied! If you misapply your tattoos, don't panic - please just see a member of our team at the Transition Help Desk who can assist you (it happens to the best of us!)

Teams

Each team will have one timing chip. Relay Team athletes must keep timing chips on their LEFT ankle at all times. Athletes will make the chip transfer from ankle to ankle at your bike in transition.

Transition

Arrive at transition on race morning during the transition open times (check schedule here)

  • Bring your helmet (with helmet sticker applied). A helmet check will be conducted as you enter transition.
  • Pump up your bike tyres.
  • Set up your gear – be courteous. Organise your gear in the order you will use it – run through transitions in your mind, bike then run and remember to take everything you need for your swim.

  • Drop off your bike pump and gear bag if needed at the Gear Drop located next to Transition.
  • You might now have some time between transition and your race start. Now is the time to grab a coffee, go to the toilet, do a warm-up swim if wanted… and relax!

  • Be at the swim start at least 15mins prior to your race start. Look out for others wearing the same coloured cap as you they are part of your wave and generally a good indicator of where you need to be.

  • The 2XU swim start will be a rolling category start format. What this means is that within each category, athletes will seed themselves based on their projected swim times. Each category start will have 4 start zones, and athletes will be released in intervals. Your time will start once you cross the timing mat on the beach. Check the swim start times here.
