Mooloolaba Welcomes Triathletes for Weekend of Racing

11 March 2021

Australia’s triathletes are set to shine the spotlight on Mooloolaba this weekend with the 29th running of the Mooloolaba Triathlon.

Over 4,000 participants will swim, bike and run their way around the Sunshine Coast, with races to be held on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday will see up to 750 triathletes take part in the Sprint Non-Drafting race, with almost 3,300 to contest the Sprint Draft-Legal, Australian Elite and Under-23 Standard Championship, Standard and Team Relay events on Sunday.

Mooloolaba Triathlon Race Director Toby Keegan said that event organisers were looking forward to welcoming triathletes back to Mooloolaba this weekend.

“The Mooloolaba Triathlon is a special event for the Sunshine Coast community and we can’t wait to see more than 4,000 athletes test themselves across the weekend,” said Keegan. “The last year has been tough for so many people, but it’s great to be able to hold an event that has been a part of the community for almost 30 years, an event that is looked forward to each year.

“With people spending much of the last year at home we know that many took the opportunity to get active and try something new and we’ve seen that translate into entries for this year’s Mooloolaba Triathlon, with 51% taking part for the first time,” he said. “I look forward to seeing them all achieve their goals as they cross the finish line over the weekend.

“A part of the ongoing success of the Mooloolaba Triathlon comes down to the incredible support from our volunteers who give up their time to support this event, and I’d like to thank the more than 600 volunteers who will be out on course supporting the athletes,” said Keegan.

The 2021 Mooloolaba Triathlon will have a distinct Queensland feel to it, with more than 90% of participants residing in the Sunshine State.

The event also highlights the accessibility of triathlon, with the oldest participant 79, while the youngest is just 14, with six paratriathletes also set to take part over the weekend.
