Athlete Update - Coronavirus (COVID-19)

12 March 2020

The IRONMAN Group is aware of the evolving situation related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) that has resulted in the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring a public health emergency of international concern. We are monitoring the situation very closely and are continuing to work with the local authorities to follow and implement measures dictated by national and international health agencies and governments.

The Australian Government is advising against non-essential organised gatherings of 500 or more people, effective from Monday 16 March; and therefore we will be proceeding with the 2020 Mooloolaba Triathlon this weekend as planned.

We do want to reiterate that the most important thing you can do is practice good hygiene. The WHO recommends the following:

  • Washing your hands frequently - Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and dry them thoroughly
    • Before eating or handling food
    • After using the toilet
    • After coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose or wiping children’s noses
    • After touching public surfaces
  • Maintain social distancing - Try to maintain a metre away (3 feet) from people who are unwell
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
  • Practice respiratory hygiene
    • Covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze
    • Disposing of used tissues immediately and appropriately in a bin
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
